Works in Progress : The Published

At the successful closing of the 25 years's military career in the Kingdom of Siam (1881-1906) of Colonel G.E. Gerini or Phra Sarasasana Balakhandh, the Director-General of Military Edcuation of the Royal Army of Siam, a list of his publications on Oriental Studies was printed in-8, 4 pp. in Italian language covering his publications inclusively from 1890 to 1905 : I. Studi Orientali (The Oriental studies) in English, French, Italian and Siāmese (31 items) and II. Libri di Testo per l'Insegnamento Militare nel R. Esercito Siamese ed altre pubblicazioni (The textbooks for Military Teaching in the Royal Siāmese Army and miscellaneous subjects) in Siāmese language (5 items).

This small four-page publication in Italian, the only copy available in his Private Archive, was first studied by Luciano G. Gerini, his grand-nephew, and then, by Associate Professor Kanokwan [Rittipairoj] Gerini of Silpakorn University in Bangkok who helped fulfill his intention to find all the publicaions in print and, at the same time, continued to investigate further into his unknown publications and unpublished manuscripts. Subsequently, the manifold publications in English, Italian and Siāmese languages and a huge collection of multilingual unpublished manuscripts volumes and paralipomena available in Microfilms kept at the National Library, the National Archive in Bangkok, L'Orientale in Naples and many Private Collections have been collected and catalogued.

Amazing enough, the works on 'The List' which are merely a part of the works produced by one man during the transition to the twentieth century cover all the important aspects of Siam and the Orient ranging from philosophy, archeaology, anthropology, geography, history, linguistics, pilology, literature, science, military education to laws. The benefits from the cataloguing, editing and publishing all his works will be invaluable for all. This leads to the establishment of GISSAD or Gerini International Siāmese Studies Archive and Database in 2004 by Dott. Luciano Gerolamo Gerini and Assoc Prof Kanokwan. The objectives are (1) To edit and publish the manuscripts of G.E. Gerini (2) To create study centre where scholars interested in Siāmese studies can research archival material and where seminars and exhibitions can be held (3) To create database and make available for scholarly use on line and in editing software. This GISSAD was financially supported by Department of Western Languages, Faculty of Archaeology of Silpakorn University for the first two years. Two Thai-Italian Conference on Gerini's works and manuscripts have been organized in Thailand in 2005 and 2006 by Silpakorn University and the Embassy of Italy in Thailand. Many archival exhibitions, lectures, talks about his works and manuscripts have been subsequently organized in Thailand; many papers have been simultaneously presented abroad. Now GISSAD is under the supervision and support of Luciano G. Gerini and Associate Professor Kanokwan Gerini, who is also the Administrator and Editor of www.gissad.net, Curator of GISSAD and the one who continues establishing Gerini's genetics of his working manuscripts for the research purposes.
